The 15 most anticipated theatrical movies of Summer 2024

There are plenty of great movies hitting theaters this summer and we’ve gathered all the details available so you can plan your summer movie watching. From thrillers such as A Quiet Place: Day One and Twisters, to sequels such as Despicable Me 4 and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, plus Wolfs starring the irresistible team of George Clooney and Brad Pitt, this summer has much to offer! ~Alexandra Heilbron

The Bikeriders (June 21)
One of Hollywood’s hottest young actors — Austin Butler — comes straight from his role in Dune: Part Two earlier this year to play a young biker in this movie based on Danny Lyons’ book about a real-life Chicago biker gang in the late 1960s. Tom Hardy plays the leader of the biker gang, who’s struggling to keep their enemies away.

Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 (June 28)
Kevin Costner directed, co-wrote and stars in Horizon: An American Saga. It’s coming to audiences in two parts — Part 2 hits theaters on August 16, and it’ll be interesting to see how receptive audiences will be to this two-parter. Recently, Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning presented the first of a two-part story, but when there was audience blowback, the first movie’s name was changed to remove “Part One” and the second film, which doesn’t yet have a title, has been delayed to May 2025.

A Quiet Place: Day One (June 28)
In this prequel to John Krasinski’s hit movie A Quiet Place, we see what happens when the sightless aliens, who can hear their prey, land on Earth. It stars Lupita Nyong’o as Sam, a woman who is rescued by a stranger (Joseph Quinn) when she’s trapped under a car during the invasion.

Despicable Me 4 (July 3)
Gru (Steve Carell) has a lot on his hands — he and his wife Lucy (Kristen Wiig) have a baby son, Gru Jr.,  who likes to torment his father. When the family, including Margo, Edith, Agnes and the Minions, face a new nemesis (Will Ferrell), they’re forced to go on the run.

Twisters (July 19)
It’s been years since the hit film Twister released and finally Hollywood has come out with a sequel. Storm-chasing techniques are high tech now, and former storm chaser Kate Cooper (Daisy Edgar-Jones) is lured back to the open plains to test a groundbreaking new tracking system. There, she crosses paths with charming and reckless social-media superstar Tyler Owens (Glen Powell).

Deadpool & Wolverine (July 26)
Good friends Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, who have long entertained fans on social media with short skits, take their friendship to the big screen in the continued adventures of former Special Forces operative-turned-mercenary Wade Wilson a.k.a. Deadpool in this Marvel/X-Men crossover that finds Jackman reprising his Wolverine role, with Jennifer Garner reportedly on board as Elektra.

Borderlands (August 9)
This action/adventure sci-fi film is based on one of the best-selling videogame franchises of all time. It follows a group of misfits searching for a missing girl on the planet Pandora. The all-star cast includes recent Oscar-winner Jamie Lee Curtis, Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and rising young star Ariana Greenblatt.

It Ends With Us (August 9)
Romance fans will want to see this adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel starring Blake Lively as florist Lily Bloom, who meets handsome and charming Ryle (Justin Baldoni from Jane the Virgin, who also directs). Their romance blossoms, until Ryle’s violent temper explodes. When Lily’s childhood boyfriend (Brandon Sklenar) shows up, it further complicates things.

Trap (August 9)
Josh Hartnett plays a dad who takes his daughter to a pop concert in this latest thriller from M. Night Shyamalan. When Cooper leaves her alone for a moment to visit the restroom, he spots an excessive amount of police in the arena as well as surrounding it, and finds out the Feds are hoping to catch a serial killer known as The Butcher, who is supposed to be in attendance.

Alien: Romulus (August 16)
Director Fede Alavarez directs this latest installment in the Alien franchise. It takes place between the events of Ridley Scott’s first Alien film and the 1986 sequel Aliens, directed by James Cameron. While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young space colonizers come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe.

The Crow (August 23)
Based on the 1989 limited comic book series of the same name, this is a remake of the 1994 film of the same name, known best for the tragic death of Brandon Lee, who was killed by a prop gun. Bill Skarsgård steps into the role Lee played — that of Eric, a dead musician who comes back to avenge the murder of his soulmate.

Blink Twice (August 23)
Tech billionaire Slater King (Channing Tatum) meets a cocktail waitress (Naomi Ackie) and invites her and her friend (Alia Shawkat) to spend the weekend with him and his friends on his private island. At first, things are amazing. They enjoying lounging by the pool, drinking champagne and eating food prepared by a chef. But things slowly begin to get strange. And then a little more strange. Even sinister.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (September 6)
Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder) tells her daughter Astrid (Jenna Ortega) about what happened when she was a teenager. After a family tragedy, they return to the house in Winter River. Although Lydia thought Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton) was gone forever, Astrid inadventently brings him back. A follow-up to the 1988 comedy Beetlejuice, about a ghost who’s recruited to help haunt a house.

Transformers One (September 20)
This animated origin story set on Cybertron, home of both the Autobots and the Decepticons, will focus on the relationship between Optimus Prime and Megatron, who were once friends that were as bonded as brothers. Featuring the voices of Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson and Brian Tyree Henry.

Wolfs (September 20)
It’s been far too long — 16 years in fact — since audiences had the opportunity to enjoy Brad Pitt and George Clooney starring in the same film. This action/comedy is bound to bring fans to the theater for the story of two lone wolf professional “fixers,” both set in their ways, who discover to their dismay that they’ve both been hired to do the same job and not only that, they have to team up when something unexpected occurs.
