It seems like just yesterday Tom Cruise famously jumped on Oprah Winfrey’s couch to declare his love for Katie Holmes. Now, five years later, the married couple is reportedly calling it quits. “This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family,” her attorney Jonathan Wolfe told People magazine. “Katie’s primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter’s best interest.” Cruise and Holmes have one child together, six-year-old Suri. Although there had been no visible signs of distress in their very public relationship, several recent reports suggested Katie was having a hard time dealing with her struggling acting career while Tom enjoyed even greater success, especially with the recent release of his latest film, Rock of Ages. Neither Katie or Tom have commented on the split yet.
UPDATE — Tom’s rep has just released the following statement: “[Katie] has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children. Please allow them their privacy.” According to TMZ, Katie claimed “irreconcilable differences” in the divorce papers and is also seeking sole legal custody, a “suitable amount” of child support and a division of property.
