Canadian heartthrob Ryan Reynolds is set to come back to Toronto next week for the screening of his “claustrophobic” film Buried at the Toronto International Film Festival - a film that is being called an “actor’s showcase” for Reynolds, given that he is the movie’s only onscreen actor.
In the film, Reynolds plays a U.S. civilian truck driver on a contract assignment in Iraq, but when his convoy is attacked by Iraqi insurgents, he’s knocked unconscious and awakens to find that he’s been buried alive in a coffin with only his wits, a cigarette lighter and a BlackBerry to save him.
In the new international trailer released a few days ago, Reynolds is shown going through a range of emotion while trapped underground, from the obvious panic, fear and terror to even the "dark comedy of his acceptance of the situation", according to one reviewer.
“My job as an actor was to look at the material from an emotional standpoint. It was the director’s job to think about things from a technical standpoint. What I was intrigued by was the idea that a character could go through an entire journey inside such a limited physical space,” Reynolds told Eye Weekly in a recent interview.
The thriller is set for its special presentation screening on September 14 at Ryerson with Reynolds on the guest list to attend, and is scheduled for theatrical release later this month.
